We have many things to achieve this weekend. We have been preparing for weeks ever since we first heard and felt that we could actually do something tangible to help. Donation hubs all of Essex had been diligently collecting sorting and then delivering to a central hub in Essex.

Corporate donations are coming in, the website has been built and we had appeared in the local paper. Contact been made both on the ground and with another like-minded group in Cambridge. I wrote schedules, planned shelters, spoke to people on the phone and blasted Facebook repeatedly for two weeks. I was existing on very little sleep a lot of coffee very many cigarettes. Friday before we left for Calais, we finally met the team that came down from Cambridge to help us. They were a jolly bunch who I liked immediately. They bounded into my kitchen with beers and chat and we sat down as a team for the first time and discussed how we all felt and what we thought we could achieve with some pallets and elbow grease. We were all very excited about tomorrow’s journey.
